If You Hate Me (Helena Hunting) Book Review

Thank you Good Girls PR for the ARC ❤️

About The Book

This book is about Beatrix who fell in love with the brother’s best friend (Tristan) when she was fourteen. Whom, over the time, became each other’s nemesis. And now Bea (Bea or Rix) is jobless and running away from her problematic roommates. Which is why she has to stay at his brother (Flip) and Tristan’s loft. They’re forced to live together (albeit temporarily), which is a recipe for falling in love. Right?

Well, sure, BUT, there’s so much more depth as the pages go.

My Thoughts

Mixed feelings! There’s a lot going on, but I was truly invested in the characters.

Beatrix

→ I love her so much since the beginning, and love her even more when reading all the effort she takes and the pride she has to swallow to be financially independent again. She’s super relatable with my own life story, and I like her quirks.

Tristan

→ I hate Tristan at the beginning. Well, him and Flip (Beatrix brother) I swear I almost hope that he vanished and prepare to write a polite review just because I don’t think they should be together. BUT. Then the story goes and we’ll understand why Tristan and Beatrix loathe each other, how they overcome their past, and how they play supportive role to each other while still bickering along the book. I learn to soften towards Flip as well.

I like that both main characters acknowledge that they’re the only ones who can change themselves, and how they communicate boundaries, expectations, things for them to work together, and bounce back from fall-out(s).

The s*x scenes are A LOT, but a lot of those are pretty necessary, I think, because they play important part in the character flaws and plots. And now I’m not sure I cannot NOT think about this book every time I see a cucumber. This book is good for those who are not that into hockey but want to read hockey romance.

I think this is good for those who are not that into hockey, but still I’m melting every time the boys huddled together and talk something that is not about hockey or showcase their masculinity.

Fav/ satisfying parts:

  • both main characters acknowledge that they’re the only ones who can change themselves,
  • how they communicate boundaries, expectations, things for them to work together, and bounce back from fall-out(s).
  • their issues are deep with a spice of fun and light jokes, somewhere between the “Pucked” series and the “Lies, Hearts and Truths” series
  • love the girls gang and the boys squad!

Summary

With the dual POV from the female and male main characters (Beatrix and Tristan), this book ticks all the boxes of what I expected from THE Helena Hunting (I love you, Helena):

  • characters with relatable problems and development
  • combination of good laugh, romance, and proper tears
  • strong headed FMC, lovely-inside MMC
  • extra spiciness
  • sparks discussion about mental health
  • her writing style; it’s easy to digest and keeps us interested
  • supportive close-friends group
